It was shown that shear-horizontal waves (i.e. not plane shear wave motions with amplitude, which decreases exponentially with the increase of the distance from free surface) could exist in homogeneous half space, if the problem is analyzed in a framework of the gradient elasticity theory, generalized so that the surface energy is taken into account.  The existence of such waves was often observed in experiments, but it cannot be predicted from the classical elasticity theory.  Dispersion properties of shear surface waves were analyzed in linear approximation. Modulation instability of such waves, which causes their self-modulation and generation of the stationary waves of envelope, particularly solitons of envelope, was studied in the nonlinear approximation.
